picconv vs CloudConvert: which should you use?

These two tools are less similar than the category suggests. CloudConvert is a broad format converter that runs on its servers; picconv is a browser-local toolbox that covers the common image and PDF jobs. Choosing between them is mostly a question of what your file is.

The short answer

If your file is audio, video, an ebook, a spreadsheet or an archive, this comparison does not apply: CloudConvert converts those and picconv does not attempt them at all. Use CloudConvert.

If your file is an image or a PDF and you would rather it not leave your device, the trade runs the other way. picconv handles the everyday image jobs - compression to an exact file size, HEIC, format conversion, EXIF removal - and 22 PDF tools including merging, splitting, organising and page numbering, entirely in the browser. There is no daily conversion cap.

What about other options

Convertio is the closest competitor in breadth - it also converts hundreds of formats on its servers. For PDF-specific work, iLovePDF and Smallpdf are the usual references. For compression alone, TinyPNG is the specialist. Every one of those has a comparison page on this site.

picconv.com is not affiliated with any tool mentioned on this page. Names and logos belong to their owners. Competitor features were checked in October 2026 and may change - confirm the current details on their website.

Frequently asked questions

Can picconv convert video or audio?

No. Video transcoding and audio conversion need sustained CPU work that does not belong in a browser tab, and we do not attempt them. Use a dedicated converter for those formats.

Why does picconv not have an API?

Because the conversion runs in the visitor's browser, there is no server to call. An API would mean uploading files to a backend, which is the architecture this site exists to avoid.

Is picconv faster than CloudConvert?

For a small image or PDF, usually yes: there is no upload and no queue, so the work starts immediately. For video transcoding or a 500 MB file, CloudConvert's servers will finish long before a browser would.

Does CloudConvert keep my files?

I cannot speak for their retention policy - check their documentation, which is the right thing to do for any service that receives your files. The point of picconv is that the question does not arise: nothing is transmitted.

Which one should a developer choose?

CloudConvert, if you need programmatic conversion inside an application. picconv has no API by design, though its developer tools (JSON, hashing, encoding) are handy for a one-off task done manually.
