picconv vs Smallpdf: which should you use?
Smallpdf is a PDF platform with a serious editorial operation behind it. picconv is a broad, privacy-first toolbox that happens to include PDFs. The overlap is real but narrower than it looks.
The short answer
If your task is paperless paperwork - signing a contract with an audit trail, editing text directly inside a PDF, or following a step-by-step guide - Smallpdf is built for exactly that and does it better than a browser tool can.
If your task is a conversion, especially one involving a file you would rather not send to a stranger's server, picconv covers more ground: 86 tools across images, PDFs, developer utilities, Markdown and SVG, in 14 languages, with no task limits.
- Need a legally traceable e-signature or PDF text editing → Smallpdf
- Need to work inside a PDF as if it were a document → Smallpdf
- Need image conversion, exact target file sizes, EXIF removal, HEIC → picconv
- Prefer not to upload the file at all → picconv

Where Smallpdf is the better choice
- e-Signature with an audit trail. A signature placed on a page is not the same as an e-signature process: timestamps, identity checks, certificate of completion and legal defensibility all matter when a contract is involved. We offer the former, not the latter.
- Editing text inside a PDF. Changing a paragraph in an existing PDF is an editor feature, not a conversion. We do not attempt it.
- Server-side PDF compression that preserves the text layer, for the same reason as iLovePDF - the server can re-encode embedded images in place.
- A much larger library of guides. If you want to learn how a format or a workflow works, they have written far more about it than we have.
- Desktop app and browser extension, plus a mature Pro tier for teams.
Where picconv is the better choice
- No upload. Every comparison on this site comes back to the same point, because it is the one structural difference: the file stays on your device. That is checkable, not a promise.
- No task limit and no account. No daily cap, no sign-up, no watermark, no nudge toward a subscription.
- Wider scope. Smallpdf is PDF-first. picconv also covers image compression to an exact target size, HEIC and format conversion, EXIF removal, background removal, plus developer utilities such as JSON formatting, hashing, Base64 and JWT decoding.
- Works offline after load, which matters if you are processing something on a flaky connection.
- Reference data you can cite. A DPI and print-size table and a nine-format comparison table are published as standalone pages.
What about other options
iLovePDF is the other tool most people compare against; it is closer to Smallpdf on PDF features and further from it on e-signature. If you only need images compressed, TinyPNG is excellent at that single job. Both have comparison pages on this site.
picconv.com is not affiliated with any tool mentioned on this page. Names and logos belong to their owners. Competitor features were checked in October 2026 and may change - confirm the current details on their website.
Frequently asked questions
Is picconv a replacement for Smallpdf e-signature?
No. picconv can place a signature image on a PDF page, but it does not provide an e-signature process with timestamps, identity verification or a certificate of completion. If the signature needs to be legally traceable, use a dedicated e-signature service.
Which is better for compressing a scanned PDF?
Smallpdf, if the text layer must survive. Its server re-encodes the images inside the PDF; a browser cannot do that practically. picconv offers a rasterising mode that gets a similar size reduction but turns pages into images, so the text stops being selectable.
Does picconv have a daily limit like Smallpdf?
No. There is no task counter and no account requirement. The site is funded by advertising instead.
Can I convert Word to PDF with picconv?
Yes - there is a Word to PDF tool, and it runs locally. Layout fidelity depends on the document: complex Word layouts convert less faithfully in a browser than on a server running a full office engine.
Which one has more languages?
Smallpdf localises its interface into more languages. picconv supports 14, but the tool content - guides, FAQs, comparison pages - is written out in each of them rather than only translated in the interface.
